Diagnosis and treatment

The urgent nature of diagnosis and treatment of CES means the window of opportunity to diagnose and treat CES is sometimes small, if the patient is to avoid some of the devastating long-term effects of the condition.

Diagnosis will typically involve a review of a patient’s medical history, physical examination and, often, an MRI scan, CT scan and/or myelogram.

The long-term impact, if permanent damage has occurred and cannot be repaired by surgery, is that the patient is likely to have long-term care needs and will need extensive professional help.

If a patient has become paralysed, or loses bladder and/or bowel control, this can result in extensive modifications being made to the life standards of a patient, long-term care or physiotherapy needs may also become an issue.
